She Stopped Shining

Two photographs of the same planet, fifty-four years apart, taken by people who were not trying to prove anything.

Two photographs of Earth, from Apollo 17 and from Artemis 2, floating inside overlapping irises, with the words SHE STOPPED SHINING between them.

Apollo 17 photographed a blue marble. Artemis 2 photographed the same object and the albedo is measurably lower. Neither crew was making a point; that is what makes the pair difficult to argue with.

Sources

Every claim in a house essay carries a source. The number beside it in the catalogue card is counted from this list, so it appears when the list does. The full bibliographic records — author, year, publisher, DOI, and an archived copy so the footnotes do not rot — move across with the migration from Substack.
